Salvation from sin is similar to a matchstick combustion.
Salvation from sin is similar to a matchstick combustion because justification is a powerful event that is both sparkling and dangerous; it emits light among darkness and is a single event that is truly awe-inspiring.
The image of fire and light is common in Scripture. God is called the Father of lights. In fact, in the Old Testament, God revealed Himself as a fire in a desert, which is described in the story of Moses and the burning bush. In the New Testament, divided tongues “as fire” sat upon the disciples during Pentecost when they were indwelled with the Holy Spirit.
Those that are justified are called be light to the world rather than hiding their light “beneath a bowl” of mediocrity. During the sanctification process, Scripture helps believers by illumining their minds to provide spiritual discernment and encouragement. Today, you hear obedient believers say they are “on fire” for God, which is a sign for personal closeness with God.
Although fire is often portrayed as a wonderful entity in Scripture, it is also the primary image used for hell. Here is where the concept of a flame is contrasted between two entirely distinct references: God’s ability to redeem as Father of lights and God’s ability to punish wrath by sustaining the lake of fire. There are no other options. People must either choose life or death, light or darkness, the gentle warmth of God’s love or the blistering fire of judgment. Even the justified must either choose illumination or marred vision, being aflame or being apathetic, breathing life or simply “blowing smoke.”

I really like the contrast between the darkness and the light. Sometimes Christians blend into their surroundings and don’t illuminate truth because they are living sinful lives. But when they obey God, they shine as a beacon of hope to people who need help.
Malia,
Thanks for sharing your comments. I appreciate it.
What I hope to accomplish through this art is to show how salvation from sin radically changes a person for the better. Instead of living inside a dark world of bitterness and rage, people that are saved possess a brand new life. They illuminate grace and truth to their friends and family.

Matt
Hi Matt,
I love the layers and texture of this painting. It’s very evocative and powerful–like your poem that goes with the painting. I enjoyed clicking on the painting and seeing it enlarged so that I could view more detail. I would love to buy one of your paintings. Is this possible? Are any of them for sale?
Thanks,
Racheal
Racheal,
Thanks for your feedback on this painting. I’m glad you enjoyed the textures. I had fun with creating the ridges inside the flame, which gave it an interesting texture.
This painting portrays the results of becoming a Christian. I chose a flame to describe what happened to me after becoming a Christian.
-Believing in Christ provided me with a cleansing from sin just like a crucible burns away impurities.
-Salvation from sin gave me a grace that others hopefully will see and appreciate just like a ship seeing a lighthouse during a foggy morning.
-Becoming a Christian is also dangerous in some countries, just like fire can be dangerous in certain situations.
-After receiving salvation, God illumined my mind to comprehend Scripture, just like a flashlight provides direction to us in darkness.
Thanks again for checking out “Flame in Darkness.” I look forward to hearing your thoughts on upcoming artwork, which will be posted on a regular basis.
Kind regards,
Matt
